The week of August 19 25, 2026 will be remembered as the moment tokenized equities stopped being a roadmap slide and became a product. Coinbase listed tokenized Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet shares on Base using its purpose-built B20 standard, backed 1:1 by shares in ADGM regulated custody, with Chainlink providing pricing and roughly fifty DeFi protocols integrated them on day one. Robinhood already serves EU users with more than 2,000 stock tokens. Ondo’s tokenized-equity platform crossed $1 billion.
Look past the headlines and a more structural fact emerges: the total RWA market grew just 2.1% in thirty days to $38.4 billion, while the number of holders grew 93% to 2.5 million. The market is scaling by users, not by dollars. Tokenization has left the treasury department and entered the distribution phase.
Three rails, three philosophies. The industry is converging on three competing distribution architectures. The crypto-native rail (Coinbase/B20, xStocks, Ondo) optimizes for composability: tokenized shares that plug into DeFi collateral and trading from day one. The brokerage rail (Robinhood’s EU offering) optimizes for captive distribution: tokens that live inside a regulated broker’s walled garden. And the market-infrastructure rail the DTCC’s Tokenization Service, launching in October under an SEC no-action letter optimizes for legal continuity: blockchain mobility grafted onto existing security entitlements.
Each encodes a different answer to the question that actually matters: where does compliance live? In the token standard (B20’s embedded transfer restrictions), in the venue (Robinhood’s perimeter), or in the custodian’s ledger (DTCC)?
Washington is watching the clock. The SEC’s tokenization “innovation exemption” has been delayed twice and is now hostage to Section 10505 of the CLARITY Act, with a Senate vote scheduled for September 15. The Treasury, meanwhile, has published its proposed GENIUS Act rules for payment stablecoins, effective January 2027. Europe, having ended MiCA’s transitional regime on July 1, is for the first time the jurisdiction with the clearest rulebook an inversion few predicted in 2023.
What allocators should track. The winner of the distribution war will be decided by three measurable variables: settlement quality (finality, failed-trade rates, corridor uptime), compliance throughput (cost and latency of eligibility checks at 2.5 million holders, not 60,000), and collateral utility (haircut schedules accepted by prime brokers and DeFi money markets). These are precisely the dimensions our indices quantify hourly. In a distribution war, the intelligence layer that scores the rails becomes as strategic as the rails themselves.
The asset was never the hard part. The rail is.
