RWA & Tokenization: measuring quality, not size Thesis

The RWA market has entered an industrialization phase; the discriminating factor for allocation is no longer TVL but the structural quality of flows (liquidity, compliance, yield distribution). Key data (mid-2026). On-chain distributed value: ~$31–36 billion (+380% from 2022); “represented” value: ~$340–369 billion; stablecoins (settlement layer, counted separately): ~$290–321 billion; RWA holders: ~790,000; tokenized Treasuries: ~$15.1 billion, with BUIDL (BlackRock) at ~$2.8 billion (18.5%) ahead of USYC (Circle) at a peak of ~$3 billion. RWA deposits in DeFi: $7.4 billion (+200% year-on-year). On-chain private credit: ~$9.5–19 billion depending on scope.

Analysis. Three ratios structure the reading: (1) distributed/represented ratio ≈ 1/10, most “RWA” is ledger mirroring, not native on-chain assets: risk of double counting in pitches; (2) weekly activity rate = 44% (56% of 1,289 assets >$100k are inactive), liquidity is the class’s hidden cost; (3) DeFi-active share ≈ 20–25% of distributed TVL, collateral composability (Morpho, Aave, Pendle) is the marginal demand driver.

2030–2034 forecasts: McKinsey $2,000 billion / BCG $16,000 billion / Standard Chartered $30,000 billion, the ×15 gap is almost entirely explained by assumptions of regulated distribution, not technology. Investment implications. Overweight assets with contractualized flows (tokenized Treasuries, senior private credit, rental real estate); require a liquidity and compliance score (MiCA/SEC) before any ticket; treat “yield” unadjusted for liquidity risk as noise. The optimal entry point is infrastructure (flow distribution, rating, custody) rather than the tokens themselves. Risks. Jurisdictional securitization gap (SPV insolvency vs. unharmonized on-chain registry); Ethereum concentration (60–70% of TVL); interest rate risk: a prolonged tightening cycle compresses the value of existing flows.
