The Silent Crisis: How AI Is Accelerating the Dumbing Down of Society

AI will lead to mass dumbing down of society. This is one of the most underestimated risks of AI transformation. The process of societal dumbing down was already rapid before LLMs, but now it could accelerate exponentially. Not progress, but degradation of society will speed up. This involves the gradual destruction of the very mechanism of intelligence formation—when a person gets a result without going through the path necessary to acquire cognitive depth.

Intelligence is not formed by consuming correct answers, but by prolonged navigation through uncertainty, information searching, error resolution, causal analysis, and self-correction of one’s world model. This is why cheating is banned in education: a ready answer destroys the educational function of a task.

AI is like a permanently attached cheat sheet. The correct answer is merely the end product of a process; the main result of learning is inside the brain through the biochemical process of independently achieving a result. To solve a problem independently, one must understand conditions, decompose the task, recall information, form hypotheses, select methods, make errors, detect contradictions, revisit, reassemble the model, and then get the result. AI can cut almost this entire cognitive chain.

Technologies and breakthroughs are created through extreme mental pressure. AI provides an instant exit from uncertainty—a simulation of exit. If this pattern becomes the norm from childhood, intellectual intolerance to effort may develop, where one loses the ability to hold a complex problem without immediate reward. Without effort, one never gains intelligence, remaining at a borderline level with animals. Independent understanding is costly, hard, slow, and psychologically unpleasant, while a plausible ready answer is cheap, instant, and comfortable. Humanity will inevitably take the path of least resistance, leading to high-intensity dumbing down.

The problem is worsened by a huge lag in consequences. Society looks statistically smarter due to AI replacement of tasks, but it degrades rapidly at its core. Thinking does not start in comfort; it is always stress, which is why no one loves to think and fears intellectual work. The neurobiological process of learning requires a state of cognitive impasse (productive frustration), where neurotransmitters focus attention on errors, and after hundreds of hypothesis iterations, dopamine reinforcement activates. This stress builds new synaptic connections. Instant solutions nullify the search and frustration phase.

The human brain confuses recognition with understanding. Reading a logical, coherent AI response creates a feeling of clarity, leading to the “honor student cheating” phenomenon: the cheater thinks understanding a proof means mastering the subject. Passive consumption of structured output only activates pattern recognition zones, leaving the prefrontal cortex in functional rest. The skill of constructing thought disintegrates, replaced by surface surfing on ready concepts.

The ability to solve non-trivial problems is directly proportional to the number of entities and constraints held in mind simultaneously. Outsourcing decomposition and structuring to AI narrows working memory to the length of a single query, destroying the entire thinking process. One unlearns holding complex, contradictory causal chains, becoming an operator of simple triggers. Expert development follows the law of cumulative hidden experience accumulation.

A high-level expert results from solving thousands of typical tasks end-to-end, resolving countless errors and boundary situations. It is impossible to grow an expert without the path that forms expertise. As the mature generation of experts exits, new experts won’t appear in comparable numbers. Previously, the internet externalized memory; now LLMs externalize not just memory but search, analysis, synthesis, argumentation, planning, and causal model formation. A fundamentally new situation arises: humanity gets to use intelligence without acquiring it.

A person asks a complex question, gets a well-structured explanation, understands (or thinks they understand) each sentence, and mistakes text understanding for their own understanding. But if AI is removed and one is asked to reproduce the causal construct, change premises, or find errors, it turns out intelligence existed only when connected to the external system. AI saves current human-hours while potentially destroying future competence investment.

The paradox: current productivity grows in many areas, while human capital accumulation speed decreases rapidly and irreversibly. Roughly, if AI access is cut off, humanity will soon turn into dumb zombies incapable of solving even the most elementary tasks. Dumbing down also leads to humanity losing the ability to verify, control, or correctly reproduce AI outputs, fully exposing incompetence. If one hasn’t built knowledge from the bottom up, they lack internal validation tools; truth becomes whatever the algorithmic oracle outputs. Society enters an era of total suggestibility, unable to solve any substantial task, losing control, management, comprehension, reflection, and the ability to formulate complex questions. This is a complete catastrophe with far-reaching consequences.}
