From Bonds to Bitcoin: “Debasement Trade” Powers Crypto Surge Amid $40T U.S. Debt

Bitcoin rallied 6% in the week of August 19, triggered by a yields at their highest since 2007, seen as a fiscal easing signal. CoinShares’ James Butterfill noted the rally was driven by macroeconomic factors, not crypto-specific dynamics. T. Rowe Price identified the “debasement trade” as the key driver, where investors shift from cash and bonds to scarce assets like Bitcoin.

With U.S. debt near $40 trillion and high borrowing costs, fiscal sustainability concerns among bond vigilantes position Bitcoin as a hedge against monetary devaluation. As of August 27, 2026, key macro indicators showed: DXY at 99.07-99.20 (technical bounce from oversold RSI), US10Y yield at 4.70% (upward pressure on long rates), VIX at 15.21-15.84 (moderate risk, no panic), July PCE at 3.7% y/y (above 2% target, raising rate hike expectations), Core PCE at 3.3% (stable), gold at $4,652/oz (+5.7% weekly, bullish correlation with BTC), S&P 500 at 7,675.7 (-1.2% weekly), Nasdaq at 26,130.2 (-3.24% weekly), and a ~38% probability of a September rate hike (pressure on risk assets).

A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) with 2 regimes applied to 90-day BTC/USD data identified a regime shift between August 19 and 22, 2026: Regime 1 (Bear/High Volatility) with annualized volatility >65% and negative DXY correlation (-0.72), and Regime 2 (Bull/Moderate Volatility) with annualized volatility ~35-40% and weakening DXY correlation (-0.31). The filtered probability of Regime 2 jumped from 23% on August 18 to 89% by August 27, confirming a structural regime change triggered by the Treasury announcement.
