Starlink Direct-to-Cell, also called Starlink Mobile or D2C/DTC

Starlink Direct-to-Cell (also called Starlink Mobile or D2C/DTC) is SpaceX’s satellite-to-smartphone service that lets ordinary, unmodified 4G/LTE phones connect directly to Starlink satellites for basic connectivity in areas without terrestrial cell coverage.

As of August 2026, the Direct-to-Cell service has been live since July 2025, commercially launched with T-Mobile in the US. Its constellation comprises around 650 dedicated first-generation satellites, forming the world’s largest geographic 4G coverage network by area. Current capabilities include text messaging, location sharing, and limited app data for WhatsApp, Google Maps, X, weather, navigation, basic browsing, and some emergency messaging. Voice and video calling via supported apps are in testing and expansion. The service works on boats up to certain offshore limits. Over 16 million unique devices have connected, with about 10 million monthly active users; the target is 25 million by end of 2026. Coverage is available in 20+ countries across five/six continents, potentially reaching 400+ million people in dead zones, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Chile, Peru, Ukraine, UK, and Philippines. It serves primarily as a supplemental roaming fill-in service, not a full primary carrier, with usage correlating to low population density and weak terrestrial coverage.

How It Works

Satellites carry LTE eNodeB payloads, appearing to phones as standard cell towers using 3GPP Release 17 SCS protocols. No special hardware or apps are needed for compatible phones (about 60 models, including recent Samsung, Motorola, and iPhone). The phone connects automatically when terrestrial signal is absent. Currently, it uses partner carriers’ mid-band spectrum (e.g., T-Mobile’s PCS). SpaceX has acquired ~65 MHz of exclusive mid-band spectrum from EchoStar (AWS-4, AWS-3, H-Block in 1.9–2.2 GHz range) for future expansion and hybrid use.

Major Partners

By 2026–2027, SpaceX plans to expand its first-generation direct-to-cell service, adding more countries, improving voice quality, and increasing capacity. In mid-to-late 2027, the next-generation (V2) satellites will launch via Starship, featuring larger phased-array antennas, higher beam counts, and a claimed 10–100× capacity improvement, with peak speeds up to ~150 Mbps per user. By the end of 2027, commercial high-speed voice and data service will begin, with Starlink Mobile operating as a hybrid carrier using satellite and terrestrial small cells on existing dish hardware with EchoStar spectrum. SpaceX expects to attract customers from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. By end of 2028, continuous global coverage, including polar regions, will be achieved with up to 15,000 direct-to-cell-capable satellites. SpaceX is also developing dedicated satellite connectivity modems for handset makers to enhance performance.
