From Speculation to Coupon: How RWA Became Private Credit’s On-Chain Twin

The most important shift in digital assets this cycle is not a price. It is a change in the structure of value.

The first era of tokenization sold appreciation: buy the token, hope the number goes up, the speculative logic of the NFT bubble transposed onto real assets. The second era, the one that began in earnest in 2025 and is consolidating now, sells something older and more durable: cash flow. The value of the token is no longer a bet on an uncertain future exit; it is the discounted stream of coupons, rents and interest generated by the underlying asset, Treasury bills, private loans, rental property, money-market instruments, distributed automatically by smart contracts.

In other words, RWA products have migrated from “speculative NFTs” to interest-bearing financial instruments, and their natural peer set is no longer crypto at all. It is private credit and fixed income.

The numbers describe a fixed-income market, not a casino. Tokenized US Treasury funds hold roughly $16 billion on-chain, Circle’s USYC at $3.0B, BlackRock’s BUIDL at $2.77B yielding 3.43% with a Moody’s Aaa-mf rating, Ondo’s USDY at $2.1B, Franklin Templeton’s BENJI at $1.7B. Tokenized private credit, the market’s high-yield sleeve, exceeds $18.9 billion in active loans at 8-15% APY. Tokenized gold adds another $7.3 billion. Smart-contract distribution has cut servicing costs by up to 70% versus traditional loan administration, which is precisely the economics that makes small, frequent coupon payments viable.

Regulation is accelerating the pivot. The GENIUS Act prohibits US payment stablecoins from paying yield to holders, pushing yield-seeking cash out of static stablecoins and into tokenized money-market funds that can distribute it lawfully. Europe’s MiCA does the same for e-money tokens. Every regulatory line drawn around stablecoins funnels capital toward yield-bearing RWA wrappers. Policy is, in effect, legislating the coupon era into existence.

Why the “rent economy” framing matters for allocation. Once an asset is underwritten on cash flow rather than exit multiple, the analytical toolkit changes completely: duration, credit spread over T-bills, default-recovery assumptions, servicing-cost drag, distribution coverage ratios. Tokenized Treasuries are the new settlement-grade collateral; tokenized private credit is the new mezzanine. A rational on-chain portfolio in 2026 looks less like a bag of tokens and more like a ladder: money-market tokens as the liquidity reserve, credit tokens as the yield engine, commodities tokens as the debasement hedge.

The risks are fixed-income risks, and should be underwritten as such. Secondary liquidity remains thin, most credit tokens are hold-to-maturity instruments, and holders should price an illiquidity premium accordingly. Oracle and bridge infrastructure remains the weakest technical link. And legal enforceability of on-chain claims against off-chain collateral varies by jurisdiction in ways that no smart contract can fix. This is why index-level, risk-adjusted measurement, netting gross APY against volatility, counterparty and compliance penalties, is no longer a luxury for allocators entering this market. It is the price of admission.

The speculative era asked: what will this token be worth? The coupon era asks a better question: what does this token pay? The institutions that built their reputations answering the second question for a century should feel at home. The ones that don’t will read about it in someone else’s shareholder letter.
